Hello!

I’m Maia, a ceramicist based in Oxford, England, originally from Philadelphia, the beloved home of cheesesteaks, water ice, and Gritty.

Though I was fascinated with ceramic arts since childhood, I lost touch with the craft when I went to university, where I studied product design.

Fortunately, my background in design and research provides me with a thoughtful approach to functional objects. I am constantly contemplating the experience of those using my work, aiming to delight through aesthetics and comfort. A few examples of my creative solutions include:

  • Mug handles that ease the discomfort of lifting a hefty mug by changing how weight and pressure are applied to the fingers

  • Looped knobs on lids and butter bells that reduce drops and prevent lids from rolling when placed upside down

  • Playful handles on olive oil bottles that allow for an easy grip, even with slippery cooking hands

Outside of functional considerations, my driving mantra, inspired by my late grandmother, is playful elegance. Each piece I craft is an opportunity to do something interesting and unique.

I’m passionate about form and influenced by art history, color, and texture. When developing new forms, I aim for curvaceous and intriguing silhouettes. As I work, I think, “What would make this different? What would be weird?”

My inspiration is varied, but ancient pottery and abstracted forms from around the world are dominant interests.
